President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats are mocking an Indiana congressman for saying Republicans should get something from the budget standoff — but he doesn't know what that is.

Republican Marlin Stutzman made the comments in an interview Wednesday with the Washington Examiner.

Stutzman said Republicans were “not going to be disrespected.”

“We have to get something out of this,” Stutzman said of the shutdown. “And I don’t know what that even is.”

Stutzman later sent out a statement Thursday saying he "carelessly misrepresented" the budget fight, the Associated Press reported.

“Yesterday, I carelessly misrepresented the ongoing budget debate and Speaker Boehner’s work on behalf of the American people," Stutzman said. "Despite my remarks it’s clear that the American people want both parties to come to the table to reopen the government, tackle this nation’s debt crisis, and stop ObamaCare’s pain.”

Obama read Stutzman's original quote to his audience Thursday, with evident incredulity, The Hill reported.

“If you're being disrespected, its because of that attitude you've got,” he said. “That you deserve to get something just for doing your job.”

Obama said ending the shutdown would mean a growing economy and new jobs.

“That's what you get,” he said. “That's what you should be asking for.”

Obama said Stutzman's already had a chance to serve the American people, and there is no higher honor.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said at a Capitol Hill news conference that Stutzman represents the Republicans whom Democrats are dealing with.
