New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says President Barack Obama is at least partially to blame for the current battle between Israel and Hamas.

"Israel is not sure that they have America's full support like they used to," Christie told reporters this weekend at the National Governors Association meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

"And that's a real failure of this presidency, in my view," he said. "And I think the unrest you see in the Middle East is caused in some measure – not completely, but in some measure – by the fact that this president has not acted in a decisive, consistent way."

Christie is president of the governor's group and is expected to make a bid to be the GOP nominee for president in 2016.

He has little foreign policy experience but has been making more aggressive statements on international affairs in recent months, The Associated Press notes.

Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, have been exchanging rocket fire for days. The current conflict was spurred by the killings of three Israeli teenagers and a revenge killing of a Palestinian teen by Israeli civilians.

Obama should focus on stabilizing the region "by having America be a forceful voice in favor of a democracy like Israel, and be condemning in the strongest terms and with actions the things that are being done by Hamas against Israel," Christie said.

Christie would not say whether the United States should take military action.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
