The White House has blasted North Korea after it described President Barack Obama as a "wicked black monkey" in an editorial in the state media.

"While the North Korean government-controlled media are distinguished by their histrionics, these comments are particularly ugly and disrespectful," said Caitlin Hayden, National Security Council spokeswoman, The Hill reports.

Meanwhile, two news stories earlier this week from the North Korean state news agency, KCNA, described the president as "crossbred with unclear blood."

They also criticized Obama for his recent trip to South Korea, accusing him of "[indulging] himself almost every day, squandering hundreds of millions of dollars on his foreign trip in disregard of his people's wretched life."

The report also suggested Obama "should live as a monkey in an African natural zoo licking the breadcrumbs thrown by spectators," according to The Hill.

While visiting Seoul, Obama vowed to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with South Korea in response to threats from Pyongyang, and said he believed Beijing was beginning to see North Korea as "not just a nuisance but a significant problem to their own security."

Obama also pledged that he would work toward applying more pressure against the country's regime.

"Threats will get North Korea nothing other than greater isolation," Obama said. "We're united on the steps Pyongyang needs to take, including abandoning their nuclear weapons and ballistic weapons programs and living up to their international obligations," The Hill reported.
