'Ben Hur' Movie Offers Fresh Take on 1880 Book

The newest adaptation of "Ben Hur" is more than just a remake of the classic movie, two of its stars tell Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview.

"It's about hope and love and about what we have inside of us and forgiveness," Jack Huston, who plays Judah Ben-Hur, told Miranda Khan.

"It's really not [a remake]. I can't emphasize that enough. That's the beautiful thing. I don't want to go and remake something."

The story was rewritten and carries a different tone than the two previous major film versions of the book, which debuted in 1925 and 1959.

The 1959 version, Huston said, "was maybe a movie about revenge and a revenge movie."

This new version is directed by Timur Bekmambetov and is "about hope and love and about what we have inside of us and forgiveness," Huston said.

"This movie is so beautiful because it's such a new take on this," Huston added. "For Judah, he's not Jesus Christ. He's a guy who comes to him at a moment where he's at his lowest and offers him water and when he needs it the most, he's someone who shows him kindness.

"That's not discriminative I'm talking about in religion. I'm saying that's just something that we should learn."

Rodrigo Santoro, who plays Jesus Christ in the film, said it's "huge and personal" to represent someone of that stature on the big screen.

"Ben Hur" opens in theaters nationwide Aug. 19.
