Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis arrived at the scene of Monday's massacre with a shotgun legally purchased in Virginia, but likely used other weapons taken at the scene, possibly from some of his victims, according to new reports.

The 34-year-old Navy reservist from Fort Worth, Texas, was thought to have started his rampage carrying his own Remington 870 12-gague shotgun, purchased from a gun shop in Lorton, Va.

But he was later found with a Glock handgun and AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, prompting an investigation into whether those weapons were obtained on-site, the Washington Times reported, citing three law enforcement sources.

The sources cautioned that the investigation was ongoing and remained fluid, the Times said.

Alexis had been cited by the Navy for misconduct eight times during his service, but had a security clearance as a Hewlett-Packard subcontractor, The Washington Post reported Tuesday. He had moved to Washington, D.C., from Texas only a month ago and had just started his work at the Navy Yard.

He was honorably discharged from the service in January 2011.

He was described by those who knew him as both gentle and vengeful, chanting peacefully at the Buddhist temple and teaching himself to speak Thai for his job at a Thai restaurant.

But he also complained angrily about his finances, saying he had been slighted by the Navy, friends said. He frequently acted childish and always carried a gun, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Alexis previously had been treated for mental-health issues, including hearing voices, paranoia, and a sleep disorder, the Huffington Post reported. He had claimed PTSD issues from working at the scene of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York.
