Missouri State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal on Sunday apologized for a Facebook post in which she hoped for the assassination of President Donald Trump, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

However, the Democratic lawmaker did not give any indication that she would resign, despite bipartisan insistence that should do so.

“President Trump, I apologize to you and your family,” Chappelle-Nadal said at a news conference, adding that “I am a servant of God, and I am a servant of the people I represent. And I failed them both recently. I have learned my lesson.”

Chappelle-Nadal had quickly deleted the Thursday post, in which she said “I hope Trump is assassinated!”

The lawmaker said she had been frustrated by the fatal attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, by an alleged white supremacist and the assertion by Trump that “both sides” were to blame for the violence.

There has been bipartisan support for expelling Chappelle-Nadal from the state senate if she refuses to resign, but throwing someone out of the legislature is so rare that even those lawmakers who want to do so admit they are currently researching the process to see if it is feasible.
