McCain Back-Tracking on Hagel Filibuster Vote

Former GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona is now saying that he might endorse a filibuster move on the Senate floor to block Chuck Hagel’s nomination as defense secretary.

Just days ago, McCain said Republicans should not stall Hagel’s nomination — but he told Politico on Wednesday that he now is waiting for a response to a query explaining President Barack Obama’s “actions and orders” the night of the of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

“We are hoping to get an answer to a simple question,” McCain told Politico.

When asked whether he now would back a vote on Hagel, the former Nebraska GOP senator, McCain said he was undecided.

“I am awaiting the answer to see whether they are going to answer or not, then I will decide,” he told Politico.

But a Hagel aide charged that Republicans “keep moving the goal posts,” Politico reports. “Sen. Hagel has nothing to do with Benghazi.”

“First, it was that Secretary [of Defense Leon] Panetta and Chairman [of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin] Dempsey needed to testify, which they did — and then they asked for more financial disclosure information,” the aide told Politico. “They know that the administration is competent, and we have the votes to confirm. They’re just trying to delay.”
