Sen. John McCain can’t comprehend the reasoning of fellow GOP senators who have vowed to filibuster a bill expanding background checks on gun buyers.

“I don’t understand it,” McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on “Face the Nation.” “The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.”

Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas, and Mike Lee of Utah are among a group of Republicans vowing to filibuster.

“I do not understand why United States senators want to block debate when the leader has said that we can have amendments,” McCain added.

Everyone wants the same goal, McCain said, “to keep the guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally disabled.”
