Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has offered heated criticism of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice over the Benghazi, Libya killings, but he has declined to go after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Indeed, the two have formed something of a bond, Politico reports. Their close ties stem from their eight years together in the Senate, their interest in foreign policy, and a sense of humor to survive the slings and arrows of politics.

McCain is full of admiration toward Clinton. “Like her husband, she really studies the issues,” he told Politico. “She is a policy wonk, and I mean that in a complimentary fashion. She puts people at ease. She is a role model to a lot of young women in America.”

Meanwhile, the Clinton camp is appreciative of McCain’s support for Clinton aide Huma Abedin after Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and four other House Republicans claimed in July that she was consorting with the Muslim Brotherhood.

With speculation brewing that Clinton may run for president in 2016, McCain said she would be eminently qualified. “She’s already run, came very close to the nomination, been a very successful secretary of state,” he said. “And I wouldn’t be surprised if her husband had a certain yearning to live in the White House again.”

As for Rice, McCain wasn’t mollified by her make-nice visit to him and two GOP colleagues Tuesday concerning Benghazi. He and Sens. Kelly Ayotte, N.H., and Lindsey Graham, S.C., were "significantly troubled" by many of Rice’s answers, McCain told reporters afterward.
