Impeachment of President Barack Obama "probably could" pass in the House of Representatives, Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Lou Barletta speculated Monday.
"He’s just absolutely ignoring the Constitution, and ignoring the laws, and ignoring the checks and balances," Barletta said in a radio interview posted by BuzzFeed.
"The problem is, you know, what do you do? For those that say impeach him for breaking the laws or bypassing the laws. Could that pass in the House? It probably, it probably could. Is the majority the American people in favor of impeaching the president? I’m not sure."
Barletta also referred to the stunning defeat
last week of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to a little-known, tea-party backed economics professor, David Brat, saying:
"There's a big message here."
"What happened in Virginia is what you’re going to be seeing around the country…" he said. "If [voters] don’t feel you’re standing up for them, they’re going to throw you out."
Politicians in Washington, he added, "better pay attention…."
Texas Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold
made the same claim last year, though he thought the issue would be over the lingering doubts about the legitimacy of the president's birth certificate.
