FreedomWorks, the grass-roots group dedicated to fighting for lower taxes and less government, is supporting efforts by Republican Sens. Mike Lee, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio to defund Obamacare.

"Right now, [Obamacare is] a train wreck, and given that we're spending money we don't have and the national debt is still $17 trillion, it just doesn't make much sense," FreedomWorks president Matt Kibbe told David Nelson, guest host of "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We're asking House Republicans in particular who have the power of the purse … [to] pass a continuing resolution that does not include funding for Obamacare," he said.

Story continues below video.

Kibbe said Lee, of Utah; Cruz, of Texas; and Rubio, of Florida, have the right idea by proposing a deal be hammered out by October that no funds be spent to implement Obamacare — officially called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — until President Barack Obama and lawmakers both agree it can work.

"We would go from there, and that's the only way we're going to get to rational healthcare policy," Kibbe said.

But the struggle to reach such a deal is bound to be bloody, he believes.

"Whatever we do on the budget, you're going to have a fight," he said.

"It's a very messy process because virtually no one in Washington wants to make the tough decisions to cut the budget, so the American people are rightly disgusted by the whole process.

"And then the very fact that we're using a continuing resolution to fund the American government is a violation of basic budget laws."

Kibbe explained that lawmakers are supposed to pass a budget every year by April 15, and reconcile all appropriations bills before the Oct. 1 deadline.

"But that's not how they do it anymore. We do have to explain to the American people why the process is broken and why it doesn't make sense to fund something that would be so unfair and so devastating to the American economy, but that's always the fight and we have to take that fight on," he said.

But Kibbe said there is no vehicle to force Democrats to do anything except the budget.

"That's why Sen. Lee has chosen this tactic. It's not pretty. It's not perfect," he said.
