Israeli police say they have questioned Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan about whether he gave Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gifts in return for favors, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Milchan is a former Israeli intelligence agent, who has financed Academy Award-winning films like "12 Years a Slave" and "Birdman," according to the Journal.

The Journal, citing Israeli media reports, said Milchan allegedly gave Netanyahu cigars and sparkling wine worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Police want to know if Netanyahu then lobbied former Secretary of State John Kerry for a visa for Milchan, the Journal reported, again citing Israel media reports.

The prime minister's office confirms Netanyahu asked about the visa because he "understood that the renewal of Mr. Milchan's 10-year visa was held up because of his reported past assistance to Israel's security."

Netanyahu, has denied any wrongdoing.

"It is allowed, according to the law, to accept presents from friends," the prime minister said earlier this year.

The probe is one of two graft investigation threatening Netanyahu's leadership, the Journal noted.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Milchan said: "We have been careful not to respond on the subject for obvious reasons, whether the information is true or false and unrealistic."

The Jerusalem Post, citing reports, said Arnon was been questioned more than once.

Milchan heads New Regency Productions Inc. and was recruited as an intelligence officer in the 1960s by Shimon Peres, who was then deputy defense minister. The Journal reports attributing its information to a 2011 biography and interview Milchan gave to the Israeli television program Uvda in 2013.

Milchan in the past has offered to assist Kerry to try to bring about peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
