Despite assurances that illegal immigrants would have to pay back taxes before being granted citizenship under proposed immigration reform, one of the bill's sponsors admits it will be impossible to collect everything the government is owed, reports The Washington Times
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is one of the Gang of 8 who crafted the bill, but admits that since people in the country illegally live in the shadows it will be impossible to collect all the back taxes they owe.
"We all realize that the system is broken. We all realize that people did wrong things. And the goal is to set this right by letting those in the shadows come out," Schumer said. "The worry I have here is that by being as rigid … as this amendment is, that it will delay and prevent many, many people from coming out of the shadows."
Schumer and others members of the Gang of 8 – four Republicans and four Democrats – who crafted the bill have said it will require illegal immigrants to pay "a fine and back taxes" before becoming legal.
While that is true, it will not require them to pay 100 percent of their back taxes. Schumer said it is impossible to expect someone who has been working off the books for many years to be able to reconstruct their work history.
Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, is not part of the Gang of 8, and he isn't happy that all back taxes won't be paid. Lee offered an amendment Tuesday to require illegal immigrants to prove they don't have any outstanding taxes they owe.
