Rep. Goodlatte: Obama Rewriting Laws, Ignoring Constitution

Wednesday, 04 Dec 2013 12:16 PM

President Barack Obama needs a refresher course on the government's separation of powers because he's altered and changed laws enacted by Congress, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said Wednesday.

"Our constitutional law professor president needs a refresher course on the separation of powers provisions in our United States Constitution," the Virginia Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

Goodlatte maintained the president overstepped his legal authority when he made changes to Obamacare. On Tuesday the Judiciary Committee held a hearing to examine the constitutionality of Obama's executive use of powers.

"I think the public has a growing awareness, but not as aware as I think they should, of the growing assertion of power by this president to do things to change laws," Goodlatte said.

Obamacare is not the only law the president has altered, Goodlatte explained. He's also made changes to immigration, EPA regulations, and "a whole host of other areas."

The effort to keep the public aware of the issue would continue in order to "shine a spotlight" on the "way the president is exercising authority," Goodlatte said.

"We'll continue to raise public awareness about the issue," he said. "We have the ability to hold these kind of hearings to shine a spotlight."
