Former GOP presidential candidate and House Speaker Newt Gingrich told a summit meeting in Ukraine that President Barack Obama would win a second term if the election were held today.
“If the elections were held today I suspect that Obama would win,” Gingrich told the 9th annual Yalta European Strategy summit, Forbes magazine reports. “But luckily for us, the Republican side, the election is not being held today.”
Much can happen before the election, Gingrich said, and the American people still need to see who would make a strong case on how to improve the economy.
“If Romney can convince that there would be a Romney recovery, he would win,” he said, Forbes reports.
Former Obama White House Chief of Staff William Daley also believes the president could win right now.
“He deserves to be reelected,” Daley told the summit, according to Forbes. The former Massachusetts governor, coming out of the Republican primaries, “did not do anything to move the ball for him to become more likable or more well-known or more understood as to what he may do, other than to say, ‘I’m not President Obama, therefor vote for me.’”
