Newt Gingrich scolded his party and his former rival Mitt Romney during the GOP National Committee’s winter meeting in Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday urging them to embrace all Americans as the party reinvents itself.

In an obvious reference to Romney's infamous  “47 percent” comment,  Gingrich said: “I am for 100 percent of the American people believing that they have a party that cares about their future. I would like to say to every consultant in this party, if you think you can target less than 100 percent, you’re not going to get any more business.”

Gingrich had some very clear advice for his colleagues: “We need to quit listening to Washington, ” he said.

He urged House Republicans to “draw a contrast with the incompetence of Obama’s reforms” by forming “a daily alliance with your governors” and other state legislators who are looking for new ways to connect with their constituents.

Gingrich views the foreseeable future as a time when Republicans can have a tremendous impact on the country, but only if they work hard and are willing to make tough choices.

“I believe we are at a turning point where, over the next two or three years, we’re going to make enormous decisions. And I am going to warn you in advance, they will be controversial decisions and it will involve a great deal of arguing and a large amount of passion,” Gingrich said. “We are faced with the obligation to think profoundly … and do things that are very new and very different.”

One of the “very new and very different” things Gingrich wants to see is a Republican Party with a lighter image. He advised lawmakers to stop complaining about Obama’s left-wing agenda and practice “cheerful persistence.”

“We need to be the happy party,” he said.
