President Donald Trump has nominated Barry Myers, the CEO of the weather forecaster AccuWeather, for administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, according to The Washington Post.

The agency's tasks include a range from delivering storm warnings to managing fisheries, the report said.

Ray Ban, co-chairman of The Weather Coalition, a weather advocacy group, praised the choice of Myers.

"In an administration that places high value on strong business acumen, Barry brings a strong track record in growing one of the most successful companies in the weather industry," Ban said in The Post.

Michael Conathan of the Center for American Progress had an opposing view, however, noting that most administrators of the NOAA have been scientists. President Barack Obama's last NOAA director was Kathryn Sullivan, a geologist and astronaut.

"President Trump has responded to NOAA's remarkable work forecasting what has been a record-breaking hurricane season by nominating an administrator who has a history of trying to block the agency from issuing weather forecasts to the American public," Conathan said.

AccuWeather has supported placing limitations on the ability of the National Weather Service to provide forecast information to the public, so that private companies such as AccuWeather can generate their own products using the Weather Service's information, The Post reported.

"Barry Myers defines 'conflict of interest,'" said Clayton Crain, according to The Post. Crain was NOAA communications director during President Barack Obama's administration.

Myers could take on the status quo at the agency, said atmospheric scientist Cliff Mass in Science Magazine.

"No NOAA administration has been willing to make the substantial, but necessary, changes. Is it possible that an outsider from the private sector might consider a fresh approach," Mass said.
