Sen. Ted Cruz took to social media on Saturday to urge Americans to end "Obama's amnesty" — referring to the program President Barack Obama endorsed in 2012 to defer deportations of illegal immigrant minors who were brought to the United States as children.

"Join the fight to stop the crisis on the border — sign the petition to #StopObamasAmnesty," the Texas Republican wrote on Facebook and Twitter.

Signed by Obama, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program ended the threat of deportation for at least two years. The president recently extended the program for two more years.

Cruz and many other Republicans have argued that the program has caused the deluge of illegal immigrant minors being arrested at the U.S. border with Mexico.

Since Oct. 1, more than 52,000 minors have been apprehended after crossing the Rio Grande River in South Texas. The administration has estimated that as many as 90,000 could be arrested by the end of the federal fiscal year in September.

Cruz demanded on Thursday that DACA should be defunded as a condition for Congress granting Obama's $3.7 million emergency aid request to address the border crisis.

Earlier Saturday, the first-term senator joined conservative commentator Glenn Beck to hand out supplies, teddy bears, and soccer balls to illegals as part of a relief effort by Beck's Mercury One organization at the U.S. Border Patrol station in McAllen, Texas.

The station has been besieged by thousands of illegals who have been arrested once they cross the Rio Grande.

The website that hosts Cruz's petition is paid for by a joint fundraising committee called the Ted Cruz Victory Committee, which consists of his campaign and leadership political action committees, The Hill reports.
