Oliver North: Obama’s Incompetence on Mideast Quashes Freedom

The Obama administration’s diplomatic incompetence in the Middle East have contributed to the denial of basic human freedoms there, and Iran threatens world peace, retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North tells Newsmax.TV.

North, a former member of the National Security Council, said it is impossible to believe any information coming from Iran regarding the controversy over its quest for nuclear weapons capabilities.

Story continues below video.

“The real problem in this case is this administration failed to back a democracy movement in Iran going all the way back to 2009,” North said during the exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. “And they have been reluctant to do anything that’s helpful as we have seen what used to be called the Arab Spring sweep the Middle East — starting with Tunisia, then Egypt, and now we’re seeing the failure, total failure,” he said.

“The attacks on Coptic Christians, the denial of basic human freedoms . . . all as a consequence of the ineptness and incompetence of the Obama administration,” he said. “That all ought to have us very, very concerned. Not just what the Iranians are saying, but in fact what the Iranians are doing to foment discontent, to back up the Assad regime in Damascus and — when you look at it — to threaten literally the peace of the world with nuclear weapons.”

To deal with the threat of a nuclear Iran, the administration “could have been and we should have been backing the democracy movement . . . They could have imposed the kind of sanctions that would have worked,” North said.

President Barack Obama could issue an executive order barring any company that does business with Iran from doing business in the United States, North said. Such an order should not be limited to banking and the selling of oil but also should such things as car tires, he insisted.

“Those kind of sanctions work and, if you want proof of that, look at the end of apartheid in South Africa,” he said.

On other issues, North said:

• He could not predict whether Israel would launch an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. “I don’t know, I don’t have the gift of prophecy,” he said.

• The Obama administration is going to “cut and run” in Afghanistan, placing “in jeopardy the sacrifices that have already made, the blood and treasure that we’ve expended in this effort and it makes one wonder will American have it together enough with the leadership we need to win a war when our own destiny is being threatened.”
