The government shutdown has forced federal agencies to cut back on all non-essential services, but a Democratic lawmaker on Capitol Hill says Congress will continue to hold its "mindful meditation session" on Monday.

The email from Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio was obtained Friday by Newsmax and invites fellow lawmakers and their staff to attend the session led by Dr. John A. Ives, senior director of the Center for Brain, Mind, and Healing (BMH) at the Samueli Institute.

"As senior director of BMH he oversees Samueli staff, fellows and researchers throughout the world who are conducting scholarly and scientific efforts on the impact and role of consciousness, spirituality, mind-body practices, and placebo on the healing process," the email said. "He is a Tai Chi and meditation practitioner and leads these activities at the Institute."

Other meditation sessions scheduled throughout October in the Rayburn House Office Building include a session Oct. 21 with Jon Waterman and Oct. 28 with Katherine Smith, the email said. Waterman has been practicing yoga, meditation and the martial arts since the 1970s, with a concentration on Buddhist insight since 1994. Smith is a mind-body skills group facilitator who teaches at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Ryan said in an email statement to the Daily Caller Saturday that the sessions offer "the same opportunity that major corporations, the military, schools, veterans, hospitals, and winning professional sports teams offer their own organizations to make better decisions."
