Former President Bill Clinton says that the mission to kill terrorist leader Osama bin Laden a year ago was so secretive that his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, didn’t even tell him about it.

“She never said a word to me about this, which is exactly the right thing,” the former president said on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” “I’m pretty sure I was notified by the White House, not the State Department.”

Former presidents are allowed to receive daily briefings from the CIA. But when Hillary Clinton became secretary of State, Bill Clinton dropped the briefings unless the president or White House officials asked him to receive them, he said.

“I give too many talks, I do too much work. I never want to inadvertently say something that complicates their job. So I didn’t know about it until they told me,” Clinton said of the bin Laden project.
