A new poll that shows President Obama's approval ratings "cratering" reflects a public essentially telling its commander-in-chief, "your presidency is over," NBC News correspondent Chuck Todd said Wednesday.

Discussing a Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey that found Obama's approval rating at 41 percent, matching a previous low – and approval of his handling of foreign policy at a new low of just 37 percent – Todd said Wednesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" show that "this poll is a disaster for the president."

Vote Now: Do You Approve Or Disapprove of President Obama's Job Performance?

“You look at the presidency here: lowest job rating, tied for the lowest on foreign policy," Todd noted. "His administration is seen as less competent than the Bush administration, post-Katrina.On the issue of do you believe he can still lead? A majority believe no. Essentially the public is saying your presidency is over."

Earlier Wednesday, Todd told the Today Show the survey question of whether Americans still have faith in Obama was "the dagger" in the Obama presidency.

"Asked if he can lead and get the job done, 54 percent say no," Todd noted. "This is as if the public is saying 'hey buddy, your presidency is over.' You may not believe it is but your ability to lead and convince us that you have the right policies anymore, we're not listening.

"That's the most dangerous poll question in this survey."
