With doctors holding out little hope that former Israeli premier Ariel Sharon can cling to life much longer, Christian supporters of Israel, led by Earl Cox and his wife Kathleen, have been calling for a worldwide prayer vigil for Sharon, according to a message Cox issued to followers of his www.israelalways.org
ministry over the weekend.
Cox has been praying outside Sharon's room at his metro-Tel Aviv hospital.
The North Carolina-based Israel Always mission is one of several Christian Zionist movements that believe that those who bless the Jewish people will themselves be blessed.
Cox wrote, "I am calling on all who love the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to continue praying for Mr. Sharon and for the Sharon family."
He said that he has maintained contact with Ormi Sharon, 48, the premier's son, political confidante and a former Knesset member, "to encourage him by letting him know that Evangelical Christians around the world were continuing to remember and pray for his father and for the Sharon family who are constantly at Mr. Sharon's bedside."
Cox said he had never witnessed "such love, dedication and faithfulness of a family for a loved one" and that he told Omri that while "Christians around the world are continuing to keep Ariel Sharon" in their prayers "God is ultimately in control."
Cox and his wife, who divide their time between Israel and the U.S., are longtime pro-Israel activists and affiliated with the International Christian Embassy
Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post
reported that former President George W. Bush and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are standing by should they be called upon to represent the U.S. at a state funeral for Sharon.
