Liz Cheney: Truth About Libya Killings an ‘Inconvenient Fact’ for Obama

The Obama administration’s failure to admit that this month’s killing of four Americans in Libya was a terrorist attack stems from political motives, says Liz Cheney, a former State Department official and daughter of the former vice president.

President Barack Obama said as recently as Thursday that al-Qaida is now on the path to defeat, so he doesn’t want to acknowledge that the group was part of the attack, Cheney told Greta Van Susteren of Fox News.

“That's been their main claim to foreign policy national security success — that the killing of Osama bin Laden has somehow ended the war or put al-Qaida on a path to defeat,” Cheney said.

“So it's a very inconvenient fact for them politically if, in fact, al-Qaida is resurgent across North Africa, in the Gulf, as we've seen in the last few days. For them to have to come out and say this was an assassination of an American official by al-Qaida after they had just had a week of spiking the football at their own convention makes things very difficult for them politically."

Cheney notes that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hasn’t been front and center in defending the administration’s position and, in fact, suggested al-Qaida participation in her speech at the United Nations this week.

“You know, I don't think that Secretary Clinton has been a particularly effective secretary of state, but I do think she's a very savvy operator,” Cheney said. “I would suspect she did not want to be the one out having to make this claim, which we now know was not honest, to the American people.”
