House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was told of the David Petraeus' affair with biographer Paula Broadwell almost two weeks before the former CIA director resigned his post, ABC News reports.

A senior Cantor aide told the network that the Virginia congressman was told about the investigation and affair by an FBI agent Oct. 27 by phone. Cantor asked his staff to pass along the information to FBI Chief Robert Mueller, speaking to no one else about it, the source  told ABC.

Cantor believed the FBI agent was believable but had never met him, so he did not feel there was a need to pass along the information to his fellow House leaders.

By then, Hurricane Sandy was wreaking havoc along the U.S. coast and the message to Mueller was delayed until Oct. 31.

Nine days later, Petraeus resigned.
