Bible Society Study: British People Don't Know Their Scripture

By Elliot Jager   |   Sunday, 09 Feb 2014 07:05 AM

Most British youngsters don't know that the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah's Ark and the Nativity of Jesus are based on the Bible, the Religious News Service reported.

A poll conducted by Britain's Bible Society found that three out of 10 British children have practically no Bible literacy— and that they are following in the uninformed footsteps of their parents.

Some 30 percent of the children polled had not heard that David and Goliath were Biblical figures or that the story of the Good Samaritan is rooted in the Bible.

Fifty percent of adults did not know Noah's Ark was a story from the Bible. Many incorrectly assumed that the Harry Potter plotline was based on a Bible story.

Practically two-thirds of children have never had a Bible story read to them by their parents.

Most non-Christian parents surveyed did not think that it was important for children to be familiar with the Bible as a source of values for a good life.

Parents in Wales were more Biblically literate than other Britons.
The online survey included 800 children and 1,100 parents. No margin of error was given.

The Bible Society was founded in 1804 to spread knowledge about the Scriptures.
