Pressure from the “liberal media” made the Susan G. Komen breast-cancer screening organization “snap like a toothpick” and reverse its decision earlier this week to halt funding of Planned Parenthood, according to conservative media watchdog Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center.

Bozell said a deluge of biased coverage from “pro-abortion ABC, CBS, and NBC News have undoubtedly played a strategic role in this pressure.”

Komen founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker announced on Friday that Planned Parenthood, which is under investigation by House Republicans over whether federal funds are indirectly used to underwrite abortions, would once again provide grants to the nation’s No. 1 abortion-related organization.

“We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” Brinker and the Komen board announced Friday in a written statement. “The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen.”

The statement added: “We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.”

Bozell says what triggered the turnabout was biased coverage from the mainstream media.

“Komen hasn't bent to political pressure from Planned Parenthood and its left-wing political allies -- they've snapped like a toothpick,” Bozell said. “And according to our statistical analysis, pro-abortion ABC, CBS and NBC News have undoubtedly played a strategic role in this pressure.

Bozell said the three networks mentioned Komen’s decision at least 13 times in the first two days after it announced it would discontinue funding of Planned Parenthood for breast-cancer screenings.

“And not surprisingly,” he said, “these reports overwhelmingly slammed Komen and sympathized with the abortion giant.”

By contrast, the MRC chief says, the networks “virtually ignored” the Obama administration’s mandate forcing thousands of Catholic institutions to contradict their own deeply held religious convictions by providing health policies that cover contraception and the morning-after abortion pill.

“In total, ABC, CBS and NBC have covered that story a whopping one time since the news broke two weeks ago today,” Bozell stated.

He added: “The liberal media are actively lobbying for a baby killing factory while deliberately avoiding the most serious threat to religious liberty in this country. It's anything but professional journalism.”
