Speaker of the House John Boehner had a simple response for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid after being referred to as running a “dictatorship” in the House: “Go f— yourself.”

Reid took to the floor of the Senate on New Year’s Eve to rip Boehner for what he believed was the speaker worrying about politics and his job rather than governing the country as legislators worked to avoid the fiscal cliff.

The exchange, which Politico reports happened not far from the Oval Office, was three short sentences long.

“Go f— yourself,” Boehner said, while pointing his finger at Reid. Reid replied to Boehner, “What are you talking about?” and the speaker repeated, “Go f— yourself.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden eventually worked out a fiscal cliff fix when Boehner and President Barack Obama could not.
