House Speaker John Boehner says Republicans are doing more to cut wasteful spending and balance the budget than the Democrats who are committed to tax hikes and budget-busting spending plans.

In an opinion piece posted on Politico Monday, the Ohio Republican said the approach is similar to the way millions of families and small businesses make ends meet, by choosing to cut costs where there's waste and find more efficient ways to spend.

"With the House budget, Republicans have shown that the federal government can, and must, do more with less. We can get spending under control and achieve a balanced budget if the president and Washington Democrats come to the table willing to make the same tough choices American families and small businesses are making every day," said Boehner.

"These hard-working Americans must balance their budgets, and Washington owes it to them to do the same," he added, stressing that the president's own budget request to Congress this year calls for $1.1 trillion in new tax increases to pay for more spending.
