David Axelrod, senior adviser to President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, is so sure that his boss will win Michigan, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania that he’s betting his most prized possession: his mustache.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Wednesday, Axelrod offered the bet during comments about Gov. Mitt Romney closing some of the gap in the three states expected to be solidly blue.

In response, show co-host Joe Scarborough said he’d grow a mustache if Obama wins either of two other battleground states.

Urgent Poll: Election Day Is Next Tuesday. Obama or Romney?

"I will come on Morning Joe and I will shave off my mustache of 40 years if we lose any of those three states," Axelrod said, adding that he “can only bet my mustache once, but I'm very confident at the end of the day we'll win Virginia [too].”

According to Real Clear Politics’ rolling poll averages, Obama is up 3 points in Michigan, 5 points in Minnesota, and 4 points in Pennsylvania. His lead in each state has shrunk in the last several days.

Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, said he would grow a mustache if Obama wins either Florida or North Carolina.

Romney has a 1-point lead in Florida and 3-point lead in North Carolina, according to the RCP averages.

Axelrod has had the mustache for 40 years and called it his “most valuable asset.”

Within hours of the bet making its way across the Internet, a parody Twitter account purporting to be written by the tuft of hair itself was created. Its second tweet was analtered image of what a shaved Axelrod may look like.
