The dramatic defections of Syrian officials over the weekend seem to point to the imminent breakup of the Assad government and possibly also the Syrian state. The effects on the entire Middle East will be enormous, and will be felt for decades to come. The West may not grasp this, but Israel, which recently announced it is upgrading its missile-defense system, surely does.
