Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says the solid GOP win in the Wisconsin recall puts the state in play for Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney this fall.

McDonnell, the head of the Republican Governors Association, tells CNN that the people of Wisconsin voted on what matters most to them: jobs, cutting debt and budget issues — the same issues he says will drive the election for the White House in November.

McDonnell says President Barack Obama "is out of time to get results and stop making excuses and blaming Republicans."

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker defeated Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Tuesday, becoming the nation's first governor to survive a recall election.

McDonnell's name has been floated as a possible vice presidential running mate for Romney.
