Former CIA agent Valeria Plame Wilson, who had been at the center of criticism over an anti-Semitic retweet, announced her resignation from Ploughshares Fund, The Hill reported Sunday.

She made the announcement Sunday on Twitter following a string of tweets apologizing for originally retweeting the article, and said she had only "skimmed this piece" before posting.

"On Thursday, I shared a deeply offensive article on Twitter. I take full responsibility for my thoughtless and hurtful actions, and there are no excuses for what I did... to avoid detracting from their mission, I have resigned," she tweeted.

The article she retweeted originally appeared in an online publication called The Unz Review and contended American Jews were pushing for war in the Middle East against Iran over its threat to Israel.

Ploughshares Fund issued a statement that said, "Our board member, Valerie Plame Wilson, seriously erred in retweeting an anti-Semitic article from The Unz Review."

"Ploughshares Fund condemns in the strongest terms what we believe to be white supremacist and anti-Semitic propaganda espoused by this site. The prejudices promulgated by this site are an affront to American values and human decency," the statement continued.

Wilson originally defended the article against criticisms she received and urged readers to "put aside" any biases when reading it. She later apologized, saying she "messed up."
