Top Democratic and Republican lawmakers are vowing to pursue recent leaks of sensitive information they believe came from the White House on the covert drone and cyber wars against terrorism.

Leaders of the Senate and House intelligence committees said Thursday they are drafting legislation to further limit who can access highly classified information — and possibly impose new penalties for revealing it.

Senate Intelligence Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein says it likely will also require that the White House notify Congress when it decides to release classified information to the media.

Republican lawmakers have accused the White House of spilling national security secrets to boost the president's reputation in an election year.

White House spokesman Jay Carney dismissed any suggestion that the White House has leaked sensitive information for political purposes.
