Sen. John McCain has been pushing for the United States to aid the Syrian rebels for two years, but little has been done, he tells CNN.
"Do you know that the United States has not given a single gun, weapon, to the Free Syrian Army?" McCain, R-Ariz., said on "Piers Morgan Live" on Thursday. "The only thing they've given them is a bunch of MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) that were about to expire."
Meanwhile, he said, planeloads of Russian and Iranian arms arrive daily in Damascus to supply the Syrian government's army with tanks and "every kind of weapon you can imagine. It's an unfair fight."
McCain said President Barack Obama is in a difficult position as he weighs his options after Syria appears to have crossed a red line he drew over chemical weapons use.
Video last weak showed civilians, including scores of children, appearing to suffer the effects of poison gas. The White House has said it has proof that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime carried out the attack.
"I think it's put him into a very difficult and contradictory position because this wasn't the first time that Basher Assad crossed the red line," added McCain. "There are some allegations that it was as many as 30 times. Absolutely as many as 10. And there's no doubt that this is chemical weapons, come on. Does anybody really believe that those aren't chemical weapons — those bodies of those children stacked up?"
