New details of the killing of Osama bin Laden are emerging with the revelation that all 25 Navy SEAL team members in the raid recorded the operation with helmet cameras. CBS News, which has obtained some of the footage, reports that the only firefight took place in the guest house of the Abbottabad, Pakistan, compound where bin Laden lived, and that bin Laden initially evaded gunshots before commandos cornered him in his bedroom.

SEALs logo“The SEALs first saw bin Laden when he came out on the third floor landing,” CBS News reported. “They fired, but missed. He retreated to his bedroom, and the first SEAL through the door grabbed bin Laden’s daughters and pulled them aside.

“When the second SEAL entered, bin Laden’s wife rushed forward at him — or perhaps was pushed by bin Laden. The SEAL shoved her aside and shot bin Laden in the chest. A third SEAL shot him in the head.”

The helmet cameras also captured the team members collecting and bagging the computer data and handwritten notes that bin Laden left behind.

What the cameras did not do was provide a continuous, real-time live video feed of the 40-minute operation. CIA Director Leon Pannetta told PBS on Thursday that technical problems caused a blackout: “Once those teams went into the compound, I can tell you that there was a time period of almost 20 or 25 minutes where we really didn’t know what was going on.”

That revelation cast another detail of the operation — the now-famous picture from the White House situation room — in a different light, The Telegraph newspaper of London reported: “The photograph released by the White House appeared to show President Barack Obama and his aides . . . watching the action as it unfolded. In fact they had little knowledge of what was happening in the compound.”
