Rubio: White House May Have Misled Congress About Bergdahl

Fox News reported on Thursday that private documents on Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl show he may have converted to Islam during his five-year captivity in Afghanistan.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio says that if those reports are true, the White House is misleading Congress.

Rubio sat in on a classified Senate briefing Wednesday night and told Fox News Channel's "The Kelly File" on Thursday that he asked questions of administration officials directly related to what Fox reported. He says the answers he was given directly contradict Fox News.

"So, clearly, if this happens to be true we've got a very serious problem with the administration misleading members of Congress," Rubio said.

Bergdahl was freed on Saturday after President Barack Obama agreed to release five high-level Taliban prisoners. Critics have said Bergdahl's release came at too high a price for national security and the safety of other soldiers still on the battlefield.

"This was part of an overall messaging strategy for domestic consumption," Rubio said, pointing out that Obama began last week with a trip to Afghanistan followed by a speech at the U.S. Military Academy in which he said the war in Afghanistan is ending.

"Then this was supposed to be what was going to cap off the week in the hopes of reinvigorating the president's image domestically as a great leader," Rubio said.
