Romney: Obama Has Failed in Afghanistan

Sunday, 18 Mar 2012 10:11 AM

By Amy Woods

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney blamed President Barack Obama for the deteriorating conditions and increasing hostilities in Afghanistan and said “what’s happening right now is an example of failed leadership.”

Appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” Romney said he would conduct daily talks with President Hamid Karzai to monitor the situation on the ground because “we have troops in harm’s way.”

“What’s happening right now is an example of failed leadership,” Romney said. “The president needs to be more engaged and interacting with not only with our commanders there but with leadership in Afghanistan.”

He said the timing of a U.S. troop withdrawal will depend on the conditions in the region and the ability of the country to maintain its sovereignty.

“Ultimately, the independence and the security of Afghanistan is going to have to be secured and maintained by the Afghans themselves,” he said. “We’re not going to stay there forever.”

Regarding the conflict between Israel and Iran, Romney said the United States should commit to use military might against Iran to prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon – and said Obama has stopped short.

“He should be less worried about Israel taking military action to stop Iran from having a nuclear weapon and more worried about Iran actually having a nuclear weapon,” Romney said. “He should make it very clear that the United States of America will not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons, and that we will take action, military action, if necessary, to prevent that from occurring.”

The Republican presidential candidate spoke out about gas prices and also blamed that on Obama and the administration’s “gas-hike trio.” Referring to the heads of the Energy and Interior departments, and the Environmental Protection Agency, Romney said high prices at the pump can be traced directly to them.

“They ought to be fired because the president has apparently suffered an election-year conversion,” Romney said. “He’s now decided that gasoline prices should come down. Well, the gas-hike trio has been going in the other direction, time for them to go, probably hand in their resignations, if he’s really serious about that, and start drilling for energy here.”

He reiterated his position that the federal Department of Education should be combined with other agencies and exude less influence on local school districts. He also said the federal teachers union should take a back seat when it comes to educating America’s children.

“Education has to be managed at the state level, not at the federal level,” he said. “The role I see that ought to remain in the president’s agenda, with regard to education, is to push back against the federal teachers union.

The federal teachers union has too much power. In some cases, they overwhelm the states, they overwhelm the local school districts. We have got to put the kids first and put these teachers unions behind.”
