Texas Gov. Rick Perry has joined some other high profile conservative Republicans in throwing his support behind embattled Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin.

"Of course Gov. Perry supports Todd Akin, a conservative Republican, over Claire McCaskill, a Democrat," Perry’s press secretary told ABC News.

But Perry, who sought the GOP presidential nomination, does not plan to campaign for Akin before Election Day, the network reported, noting that he was in Columbia, Mo. on Monday to support Ed Martin, who is running for attorney general in the state.

On Wednesday, former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum and Sen. Jim DeMint, a tea party star, announced support for Akin. They called Akin a "principled conservative" who is committed to fighting for freedom.

Akin had faced pressure to quit the campaign against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill after his televised comments that women's bodies have a natural defense against pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."

Tuesday was the final deadline to withdraw.
