Rand Paul: Cruz Needs to Present His Own Ideas

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul says he doesn't want an apology from fellow GOP Sen. Ted Cruz for comments of his foreign policy views. But he does have a suggestion.

"I'll settle for maybe he just needs to work on presenting his own ideas," Paul said Monday on Fox News Channel's "Hannity."

Appearing on ABC’s "This Week," on Sunday, Cruz said he's a big fan and good friend of Paul's, but added, "I don't agree with him on foreign policy."

Paul agreed Monday that he and the Texas Republican "always have been good friends." But, he said, "I'm not real excited about him mischaracterizing my views and won't let that pass."

Repeating arguments he made in a Time magazine op-ed on the Ukraine crisis, Paul said he's always been a big fan of President Ronald Reagan's peace-through-strength approach.

"America . . . has a responsibility around the world," he said. Most Republicans agree that  Russian President Vladimir Putin should be condemned and isolated for invading Ukraine, he said.

"I favor sanctions against Putin," he said. "So for people to characterize that as somehow not being the Reagan position, I think they need to have a re-reading of Reagan, frankly."

For his part, Cruz attempted to mend fences Monday, saying he is proud to "stand with Rand," even though he repeated that they do not agree on foreign policy.

Paul finished first and Cruz second in Saturday's presidential straw poll at the annual CPAC meeting.
