House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi flew back to her home state of California for a Democratic fundraiser attended by President Barack Obama. She did not take part in the House vote to hold former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress, The Hill reported.
The dinner to raise money
for Senate and House candidates was held at the Bel Air home of Alan Horn, chairman of Disney Studios, and was attended by some 90 invited guests.
All House Republicans and a handful of Democrats voted to hold Lerner in contempt of Congress. The vote was 231 to 187.
In a related vote, the House also called on Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate IRS behavior in targeting tea party groups. Some 26 Democrats joined in the demand for a special counsel, The Christian Science Monitor reported
Lerner has publicly admitted that the IRS improperly singled out tea party groups for added scrutiny. When called to testify before Congress, she made a short statement professing innocence then invoked the Fifth Amendment against self-incrimination, according to the Monitor.
