Pakistan should be working with U.S. officials to help negotiate the release of Bowe Bergdahl, the Army sergeant believed to be held captive by the Taliban, Gen. Jack Keane said Tuesday.

"We give [Pakistan] lots of money," Keane, a retired four-star Army general, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "They're supposed to be our ally. But, truth be known, they act against our interests time and time again."

"We've got a soldier behind enemy lines who has been detained for five years. I think it is very appropriate for us to ... try to rescue him. That's not possible, because he is likely in Pakistan," he added.

Bergdahl disappeared in June 2009 in Afghanistan and was purportedly taken captive by the Taliban. The United States has recently been working to broker his release, in exchange for five members of the Afghan Taliban held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, according to The Washington Post.

Despite the lack of progress, Keane said he was "confident our government had probably put some kind of pressure on Pakistan to give up this guy, because they know where he is."

It was easy to hide one prisoner, Keane said, which was why it had been so difficult to locate where Bergdahl was held. "I know for a fact that the military and our CIA have never given up trying to find him," Keane said.

Efforts by the United States to broker Bergdahl's release would serve as a morale boost for American troops still at war, Keane said. It's important to them "to know that their government is coming for them, one way or the other," he said.
