Sen. John McCain is facing a vote this weekend from a group of Arizona Republicans over whether he should be censured for supporting liberal Democrats on important national issues opposed by the GOP, according to The Daily Caller.
Republican leaders in Maricopa County, who are not backed by the establishment GOP in Arizona, claim the moderate Republican senator has a "long and terrible record of drafting, co-sponsoring and voting for legislation best associated with liberal Democrats."
They claim the 2008 GOP presidential nominee sided with Democrats on immigration, defunding Obamacare, the debt ceiling, gun rights and judicial nominees.
In their proposed censure for McCain's "continued disservice to our State and our Nation," the Maricopa Republicans said, "Only in great crisis or betrayal is it necessary to censure our leaders. Today we are faced with both. For too long we have waited, hoping Senator McCain would return to our party's values on his own. This has not happened."
The proposed censure continued, "Senator McCain has campaigned as a conservative and made promises during his re-election campaigns, such as the needed and welcome promise to secure our borders and finish the border fence, only to quickly flip-flop on those promises. McCain has abandoned our core values and has been eerily silent against Liberals, yet publicly reprimands Conservatives in his own party."
The group warned McCain that if the censure is approved it would mean that Republicans in Maricopa County would no longer "support, campaign for or endorse him as our U.S. Senator."
