The president of the NRA said Thursday that David Gregory’s “silly felony” of possessing a 30-round gun clip illustrates the problem some gun restrictions around the country.

David Keene said Gregory should not be prosecuted for holding up the magazine during his show, “Meet The Press,” on Sunday while making a point about gun laws during an interview with NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre.

“I really think what David Gregory did while he was inadvertently flouting the law was illustrating in a very graphic, perhaps not intentionally, but in a graphic way just how silly some of these laws are,” Keene said during an appearance on CNN's "Newsroom."

“There are two lessons for him there,” he added“1. Don’t ask the government what’s legal and what isn’t legal because half the people don’t know. And secondly, that’s a silly felony. It’s a felony in Washington, D.C., to own that magazine or to be caught with a cartridge.

”So what David Gregory did was illustrate in a very graphic way — perhaps not intentionally — just how silly some of these laws are."

When host Carol Costello pointed out that the NRA's usual position is to enforce laws that are on the books, Keene laughed. "I'm not a vindicitive guy that wants to go after David Gregory," he said. "And I don't think most people do.

"Our position is that people who use guns and firearms in the commission of crimes should be prosecuted under existing laws. This was not a commission of a separate crime."
