Senate GOP Leader: Vote on Obama's Jobs Bill Now

Tuesday, 04 Oct 2011 03:20 PM

WASHINGTON — If Democrats want President Barack Obama's jobs bill, the Senate should vote on it right away, a top Republican says. But Senate Democrats aren't ready to bring it up for a vote yet.

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday he hopes the $447 billion jobs package will not pass Congress. But the Kentucky Republican says he wants to put the Senate on the record on the proposal immediately. Obama has become increasingly forceful in urging the divided Congress to pass the jobs bill soon, delivering that message again Tuesday in Texas.

House Republicans say they do not support some of the package, and even some Democrats say it must be changed. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid suggested a vote later in the month.
