WASHINGTON — The White House said on Wednesday that U.S. food inspectors will ensure the safety of food imports from Japan, which is battling a nuclear crisis amid fears of a significant release of radiation.

"The agencies that check food imports do that every day and of course are aware of what has happened in Japan and will be checking food accordingly," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters when asked whether the United States would match Asian and European plans for greater scrutiny of Japanese food.
