Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr faces a year in jail and 90 lashes for appearing in a movie shot inside the Islamic nation that criticizes the government, according to news reports that credit the Iranian opposition website Kalameh.com.
Vafamehr’s attorney has appealed the sentence, which was handed down Saturday, the Iranian site reported.
Police arrested Vafamehr in July after she had worked on the film “My Tehran for Sale,” an Australian-Iranian joint project about a Tehran actress whose work is repressed by the government.
Iran’s Fars news agency reported that the film had not been approved and was being shown illegally around the country.
