Columnists for The Washington Post and Politico have urged Hillary Clinton to come clean about her wealth and success or risk the anger of voters in 2016 if she decides to run for the White House.
"The Clintons are not 'average' people," Chris Cillizza wrote in the Post
. "One is a former secretary of state and senator. The other is a former president of the United States. The income they have reaped from those achievements places them comfortably in the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans. Trying to cast their wealth as fundamentally different from that of other wealthy people is a losing political argument."
Roger Simon of Politico
wrote he has no problem with Hillary Clinton’s desire to amass vast sums of money, saying it’s "very American." The columnist said he cannot understand why the potential Democratic presidential candidate does not own up to the fact that she and her husband are wealthy.
"Good for the Clintons," wrote Simon. "Neither was born into wealth; they both held low-paying jobs at one time; and they both moved up the ladder of success. That is the American dream. You can’t both be wealthy and poor-mouth. Not if you want to be president."
Hillary Clinton has alarmed Democratic leaders
with her comments that she is not really rich despite estimates that she and her husband are worth $100 million.
Her controversial comments over the weekend that she’s not "truly well off," and that she pays "ordinary income taxes," fueled concerns that her disingenuous claims are turning off struggling middle-class voters.
Republicans have poured scorn on Clinton’s denials in light of the fact that she lives in a $5 million Washington home — her primary home is in New York — and earns $200,000 for speaking engagements, while also traveling in private jets promoting her "Hard Choices"
"Nobody expects Hillary to be poor," Simon wrote. "Most presidential candidates are well off. John F. Kennedy didn’t get elected by persuading people he was an average American. He got elected by persuading people he cared about average Americans. Hillary needs to try that."
