George Will to Colbert: It's Liberals Who Don't Want Change

Wednesday, 23 Apr 2014 06:31 AM

By Greg Richter

Conservative commentator and baseball super fan George Will appeared on "The Colbert Report" Tuesday to promote his new book on Wrigley Field, but host Stephen Colbert wanted to talk politics.

The comedian Colbert plays a faux conservative character for the show, and told Will he loves the 100-year-old Wrigley Field because it is still mostly as it was when it first opened.

"I'm a conservative, you're a conservative. I don't think anything should ever change," Colbert said.

"That makes you a liberal," Will said, explaining that no one drives a 1935 car or watches a 1935 television set anymore, but liberals want Social Security to remain the same as it was when instituted in 1935.

Colbert asked Will if Social Security should be abolished, and Will said no.

"I was trying to lead you into a field where old people would shoot you in the head," Colbert said.

Will also said he loves being at Fox News. He was signed as a contributor earlier this year after decades at ABC News.

"Fox News is like getting on a Southwest Airlines plane," Will said. "Everyone's happy; they're at the top of the heap and feel like insurgents."

"That sounds almost dangerous," Colbert said.

"I hope so," Will replied.

Colbert himself appeared as a guest on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" at the same time his own show was airing on Comedy Central. Colbert is set to take over the show when Letterman retires in 2015.

"I'm going to do whatever you have done," Colbert told Letterman.

"No. You don't want to do that," Letterman replied, adding, "They could have just as easily hired another boob like me, but they didn't."

"Every boob is like a snowflake, Dave," Colbert responded. "We're all unique in our own way."
