Reports are circulating in the media that Moammar Gadhafi has fled Libya and taken refuge in the African nation of Zimbabwe, which has long been in the iron grip of virtual dictator Robert Mugabe.

Moammar Gadhafi, Zimbabwe, Libya, MugabeThe unconfirmed reports, which first surfaced in the Daily Mail, assert that Gadhafi flew to Zimbabwe several days ago on a jet provided by President Mugabe.

Mugabe’s political opponents claim their spies saw Gadhafi arrive in the country and say he was taken to a mansion in the Gunninghill suburb of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, where members of his all-female bodyguard staff were seen patrolling the grounds.

“There’s no doubt that Gadhafi is here as a ‘unique guest’ of Mugabe,” a spokesman for Zimbabwe’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change told The Sun.

If Gadhafi did flee Libya, he probably left from an airbase in his home town of Sirte, which NATO forces have attacked in recent days, the Daily Mail reported.

Gadhafi’s choice of Zimbabwe as a place of exile would not be surprising. Mugabe “is an even worse dictator than Gadhafi had been,” according to the Associated Content website.

“He maintains his rule through the usual tools of tyranny, fear, and armed force. So he is the perfect soul mate for Gadhafi.

“Gadhafi should be very comfortable in his new home, provided that Mugabe, known on occasion to be moody, does not turn on him.”

The government-controlled Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corp. and state newspapers have strongly criticized Western support for the Libyan rebels.
